This week I sold my first item on Ebay! Well, not exactly, I sell stuff for the company I work for all the time. This was on a personal account that I had just setup. Unfortunately, it's been three days and I still haven't received payment or heard from the guy who won the bid. That makes it rather frustrating, but I'm forging ahead, and have listed several more items.
It's a lot of work taking the photo's and posting the ads, but it's the only way I'm going to get a decent price for some of the better items in my can collection. There are several well established beer can sellers on Ebay. The most successful sellers are listing rare mint condition cans and getting most of the bid action. In the mix, you can also find people like me who are just trying to unload their collections.
A lot of the starting bids are set at 99 cents (the highest starting bid that you can have and still list your item for free). Many of the can auctions expire with no bids at all. You will also find listing for multiple can lots. This seems to help get an initial bid, where listing the cans individually often doesn't work very well, especially for newer cans.
My plan is to hopefully get most of the value of the collection by auctioning the older cans and then offer the remaining cans in batches. In general, I think beer can collecting is a great hobby. But as you get older you realize, that if you don't pass your collection on to another collector, someday all of your hard work could end up in the dump.
