Advertising on Facebook

Advertising on Facebook is a great way to reach new customers. I recently setup an ad campaign to run on Facebook and have a few thoughts to share about it. First thing you have to know is that Facebook has a policy against using a personal account to advertise a business. You have to setup a separate business account. Business accounts on Facebook feel like an afterthought because they use the same template, but have limited feature access. For one thing, you can't search for anything on Facebook from a business account. That makes it hard for a business account user to see what the competition is doing. Setting up the ad campaign is simple. There is a limit on the number of characters in your ad, but it is more than you get with Google Adwords. Facebook has the demographic info to target effectively, they even tell you how many potential customers your ad will reach. The bidding process is a bit undeveloped. They do suggest a per-click bid price, but that number fluctuates daily. So your ad will do well on the first day, but after that it seems you have to manually adjust your bid in order to keep the impressions up. I'm sure this will improve over time. It looks like the start of a good ad platform, but right now, it may leave you wishing for more.
