A new feature has been added to the Machine Shop List website. The Part Cost Estimator is a tool to help determine the cost of having a part made by a machine shop. The form will allow you to select material, size, feature count, finish, and other parameters for your part. The form calculates the cost of material based on the cost per pound of the material selected. Labor and equipment rates can be adjusted along with other values. It also calculates shipping, expedite rate, and volume discounts. All of the code for this web tool is written using javascript. This allows the cost estimator to read values from the form when the Calculate button is pressed. No data needs to be submitted to a server before the results are displayed. This is an example of a web form that might be used to replace a tool written in Microsoft Access or Excel. Contact Budget Homepage if you would like to provide any feedback that might improve the Part Cost Estimator.
